Wake Up Call! – Your Courage

YOUR COURAGE

Your courage to be guided by what sustains your life is a precious gift.

I was mesmerized by a formation of twelve hundred stones this week. I was on Robben Island and each stone had been placed by a former political prisoner at a reunion marking their years or decades of incarceration.

I could have viewed it as another cairn of stones but instead it was a place of pilgrimage.

Thinking of the great pilgrim sites I remembered their drawing us into truths more spacious than ourselves. I was invited to think of the courage of each person who had placed a stone on the cairn; the courage to believe in freedom and their own worth in the midst of attempts to destroy them.

The courage of ordinary people has filled my mind this week. It’s caused me to pause and acknowledge the dark moments in which I’ve had the courage to sustain my own worth and goodness. What courage sustains you on your journey?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be thankful for the courage of those known and unknown to you

  • Be mindful of the courage you have in life’s challenging times

Notice how courage sustains you and give thanks for its many expressions.

Wake Up Call – Contagious Happiness

CONTAGIOUS HAPPINESS

When you do something that makes you happy your happiness is contagious.

I wondered if I really had time for the hike I wanted to take. I was convincing myself that tasks to be done could only be accomplished if I let go of the hike. I could feel my frustration growing!

I could have chosen to prioritize my personal task list but chose to be attentive to why I needed to hike.

At the head of the trail I wondered if I should have stayed home. Then I began to notice the enjoyment of the other hikers I passed and settled in to listening to my breath and taking in the beauty around me. I smiled at myself for having made this choice so agonizing!

That evening over a meal with friends I was asked why I seemed so happy. As I spoke about the hike others started to talk about a particular happiness in their day. What choices will you make about doing that which spreads happiness?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be mindful of the choices you make each day

  • Be aware of who and what makes you happy

Notice how happiness choices enliven you and others.

Wake Up Call! – Bursts of Silence!

BURSTS OF SILENCE!

Short bursts of silence allow you to be present to what matters in your life.

The host of a business meeting invited the participants to honor a two minute silence of mindfully being present to their own breathing. I was unprepared for the request and surprised by an executive who said afterwards, “I’m always on the go, multitasking; my mind races. I forget to be still and allow the silence to reconnect me to what matters.”

The choice to be present to the stillness is a choice about how to navigate each day.

As I listened to the reaction of that executive I realized that my own practice of short bursts of silence is all too easily upended by the insistent din of the supposedly urgent.

I once thought that two minutes bursts of silence were not enough to remind me of the grounding of my life. But I’ve learned that their gift is immeasurable. My day is rejuvenated and refocused by them. What will I chose when the urgent detracts me from what is important?

Call-to-Action:

  • Choose to be present to your breath in silence

  • Select a few times that work in the rhythm of your day

Notice how the stillness of a burst of silence refocuses your day.

Wake Up Call! – Stop Complaining

STOP COMPLAINING

No matter how real my complaints are they invite me to take stock of what I’m blessed by.

I was at the end of a remarkable work project that consumed a lot of time. On the way home my thoughts were filled with a torrent of complaints about the journey back. They made me feel unpleasant.

Instead of wallowing in my complaints I asked why I giving them my attention.

Yes it was an arduous journey home to return to a busy schedule. But those were not the lenses that I want to choose because they keep me away from being aware of the blessings of life.

As I expressed my gratitude for the work I’d been able to do and the people I worked with I felt thankful; a more healthy energy and equilibrium was accompanied by calm.

Call-to-Action:

  • Be aware of what you choose to open your energy to

  • Express gratitude for the things and people that are a blessing

Notice how your valid complaints are seen with new eyes when you choose to name your blessings.
