Wake Up Call – Contagious Happiness

 


CONTAGIOUS HAPPINESS

When you do something that makes you happy your happiness is contagious.

I wondered if I really had time for the hike I wanted to take. I was convincing myself that tasks to be done could only be accomplished if I let go of the hike. I could feel my frustration growing!

I could have chosen to prioritize my personal task list but chose to be attentive to why I needed to hike.

At the head of the trail I wondered if I should have stayed home. Then I began to notice the enjoyment of the other hikers I passed and settled in to listening to my breath and taking in the beauty around me. I smiled at myself for having made this choice so agonizing!

That evening over a meal with friends I was asked why I seemed so happy. As I spoke about the hike others started to talk about a particular happiness in their day. What choices will you make about doing that which spreads happiness?

Wake Up Call! – Your Labels

 


YOUR LABELS

When people label you can choose to honor, reject or redefine the label.

What labels have been applied to you? I remember the first time I was called a faggot. I was 13 years old and I cringed with fear, shame, anger and rejection. I knew that I was gay and the label was intended to diminish and demean.

I could choose to accept the terror of the label or I could wrestle with a richer truth that seemed hard to articulate at that age.

Over the years I befriended the “f…..” label as I accepted who I am. When I hear that word I feel affection toward it even though I know it is still a weapon for others.

I’ve learned that a myriad of labels used to define me can be interpreted in many ways for good or ill. When I am grounded in who I am I can honor their goodness, redefine their intent, or reject them. What will you do with the labels used about you?

Wake Up Call! – Unleashing Gratitude!

 


UNLEASHING GRATITUDE

Unleash your gratitude for friends that include nature, animals and humans.

I was with my dog Lucy in the waiting room of a veterinary hospital surrounded by animals and their human companions. As I chatted with people I was struck by their tender concern for their animals and the affection radiated by the animals.

I could have ignored this ecosystem of friendship but found myself celebrating it with new awareness.

As I gave thanks for Lucy’s loving friendship and playfulness in our household I remembered her lavish attention given to my dying mother and the comfort it brought to my mom. A memory surfaced of Sheba, the dog who gently nurtured me back to health after my teenage spinal surgeries.

My gratitude for the animals in my life has a keener appreciation to it. Their friendship is as vibrant and life-giving as any other. It feels like a richer circle of gratitude.

Wake Up Call! – Kindness Mantra

 


KINDNESS MANTRA

Living with the intention to practice an act of kindness each day is transformative.

Last week I remembered the words of a wise guide who once said, “Be intentional about practicing an act of kindness every day because it will become a life-changing mantra.” I was on a small commuter plane last week and noticed that a young child and her dad were not able to sit together.

I could have kept my coveted aisle seat but instead chose to switch seats so they could be together.

It was a simple thing to offer. I was unprepared for the gratitude of the father. My joy was in hearing the two of them chatting on the flight in the row behind me.

As I remembered the wise words that led me to begin each day with an intention to be kind I realized that this mantra for daily living is an opportunity to be aware of those around me. What word, gesture or act of kindness will present itself today?

Wake Up Call! – Bursts of Silence!

 


BURSTS OF SILENCE!

Short bursts of silence allow you to be present to what matters in your life.

The host of a business meeting invited the participants to honor a two minute silence of mindfully being present to their own breathing. I was unprepared for the request and surprised by an executive who said afterwards, “I’m always on the go, multitasking; my mind races. I forget to be still and allow the silence to reconnect me to what matters.”

The choice to be present to the stillness is a choice about how to navigate each day.

As I listened to the reaction of that executive I realized that my own practice of short bursts of silence is all too easily upended by the insistent din of the supposedly urgent.

I once thought that two minutes bursts of silence were not enough to remind me of the grounding of my life. But I’ve learned that their gift is immeasurable. My day is rejuvenated and refocused by them. What will I chose when the urgent detracts me from what is important?
