Wake Up Call! – A New Year Intention

A NEW YEAR INTENTION

Greet the New Year with intention about expanding your heart of love.

My sweeping New Year resolutions were made with a wink knowing that they would be ephemeral. And so I stopped making them. But something was missing – the start of a New Year presented an invitation to recalibrate my journey or the year ahead.

Instead of being mired in the debris of failed resolutions I chose to make an intentional commitment to a practice for the year ahead.

This year it was daily reflection or meditation on my chosen word for the year, Awe.

It resulted in new appreciation for the wonder and magnificence discovered in others and nature expanding my gratitude for being part of the grandeur of the Universe. For the year ahead I choose to expand my heart and consciousness of love and trust (read more here). What will you choose?

Call-to-Action:

  • Choose a daily practice for the year to incorporate into your routine

  • Be grateful for the invitation it offers you

  • Begin each day with intention about your practice

Notice the new consciousness and expanded heart that your year of intention offers.

Wake Up Call! – Holiday Delight

HOLIDAY DELIGHT

Allow yourself to be delighted this holiday season.

This year playful holiday lights adorning homes, tree ornaments revealing family stories and exuberant Christmas decorations have stopped me in my tracks.

Instead of making assumptions about their annual appearance they’ve invited me to experience the delight and joy of others.

They reveal something of the hopes and yearnings of others. They point me to the gladness they herald.

Each of these expressions reveals something about the unique magnificence of those who have put them up. I smile with gratitude and my heart is thankful. What delight will I share with others this season? What unexpected delight will I be open to?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be present and open to the delight of the season

  • Give thanks for those who invite you to new delight

Notice how delight fills your heart with appreciation for the joy, love and gladness of others.

Wake Up Call! – Holiday Kindness

HOLIDAY KINDNESS

A simple word of kindness acknowledging another person is a gift to you both.

The store was busy and the sales clerk seemed frazzled. As I stood on line the customer in front of me vented her anger at not finding an item. When my turn arrived I said, “I’m so sorry that you had to endure that.”

I could have chosen to ignore the situation but it was difficult to not acknowledge the distress on the clerk’s face.

She choked back some tears and said, “It’s hard to deal with at the holidays but most people are nice.” As we spoke about her holiday plans as she rang up my purchase she said, “Thanks for bringing kindness into my day.”

Our brief chat transformed a transaction into a human connection. What other opportunities for kindness had I not noticed that day. Will I be open to the circle of human kindness in unexpected interactions today?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be aware of those around you and the invitation to connect

  • Offer a kindness from your heart to another person today.

Notice how every act of kindness to another is a gift to you both.

Wake Up Call! – Grief & Celebration

GRIEF & CELEBRATION

Allowing grief and celebration to coexist creates space for life giving truths to emerge.

I’ve been mourning Nelson Mandela and our loss of him. I’m also celebrating his wisdom, life and example. At moments my mourning and celebration seem to have me in two different orbits.

In choosing to acknowledge both reactions I allow myself to be present to the light that each one sheds.

As I plumb the depths of my grief I realize that Madiba’s death is like losing a wise sage in my family. In celebrating his words and acts of generosity I’m pulled in by their simple towering power.

A new awareness of an old truth emerges. The very loss that I cherish about his life is in our collective hands. Surely the way that grief and celebration are honored is revealed by how we speak and act in the irreversible march for freedom?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be attentive to what grief and celebration reveal in your life

  • Allow yourself to learn from what they reveal

Notice how your heart and step are enlivened by the emotions that coexist in you.

Patsy

I shared in the cooking of Thanksgiving dinner this year. I tried a new braised cabbage with apples dish that was new to me. My cooking partner liked it so well she wanted a copy of the recipe. I, also, made cranberry sauce sweetened with maple and agave syrups.

Wake Up Call! – Unexpected Joy

UNEXPECTED JOY

Sharing a task with others opens your heart to unexpected joy.

I love to cook – the planning, shopping and work in the kitchen. It is creative mindfulness. Years ago I was flustered by a friend who unexpectedly took charge of making two of the dishes I was cooking. This was not according to plan!

Beyond my initial panic of losing control of the meal I chose to enter into the moment.

My friend did not create the dishes as I would have. I was surprised by his imaginative creation. Years later I enjoy the spirit of cooking with others.

Sharing of tasks transforms them. In place of solitary cooking I discover unexpected joy in the conversation, creativity and companionship of kitchen friends. What will I mindfully chose?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be awake to the tasks that can be shared with others

  • Be open to the unexpected joy and communion they invite

Notice how your heart expands with gladness as you share in tasks with others.
