Wake Up Call! – Embracing Life

EMBRACING LIFE

My greatest inspirations are people who embrace life as a result of their own losses.

Francine’s abiding curiosity and passion about life has always been striking to me. She seldom talks about herself but told me that the hardship of her childhood years and the suicide of her son framed her life as series of choices about intentionally choosing life.

Her clarity inspires me in the choices I make each day.

Francine sparkles when she talks about those who do their bit of goodness in the world. Her curiosity about their work is insatiable.

In the choices life presents each day Francine is like a guide reminding me of the gifts of curiosity, goodness and engagement. Today I will choose to be present to life.

Call-to-Action:

  • Be aware of what guides your choices

  • Be mindful about making choices that are life-giving

Notice how curiosity, goodness and engagement frame your experience of life.

Wake Up Call! – Words to Live By

WORDS TO LIVE BY

The words that we live by are a compass for expanding our heart of compassion.

Participating in events with Desmond Tutu this week I’ve been reminded that one of the words that grounds his life is goodness. A deeply help belief in the intrinsic goodness of others and our capacity to make choices for the good of all.

I’m reminded that I have a choice about the words I live by.

Reflecting on those words I realize they shape my speech, hopes and actions. They are the compass for each day.

Instead of being harsh on myself for my daily failures to live fully into the words that guide me I have a renewed lightness in my step. The words that guide me are not to be judged by but to live into with gladness. Today I will hear their invitation in a new way.

Call-to-Action:

  • Be attentive to the words which guide your life

  • Be present to their invitation

Notice how your heart of compassion is expanded by the words that are your compass.

Wake Up Call! – Life Giving Conversations

LIFE GIVING CONVERSATIONS

Creating peace within your own life includes letting go of old conversations that clutter your heart.

Years ago an old toxic conversation kept rattling around inside of me. It was a pernicious clutter that offered only toxicity.

I could allow it to continue or proactively make choices for further grounding my life in peace.

Awareness of the life-draining nature of this old conversation was a prelude to detaching from it and offering those who were involved in the original conversation to the loving care of the Universe.

It resulted in what felt like a toxic cleanse. In its place I discovered new freedom to seek the inner peace that honored the need to pay attention to my well-being. Detachment created expanded space in my heart for life giving new conversations.

Call-to-Action:

  • Acknowledge that which keeps you from peace within

  • Detach from it to create space for what enhances your well-being

Notice how life-giving conversations and actions expand your heart and peace.

Choosing Not to be Tripped Up

I recently found myself double-booked for the same timeframe by entirely separate, unrelated events which just happened to take place 50 yards from each other. I knew they were both to occur on the same day, but I expected they would be consecutive, not simultaneous. Imangine how stressed I could have felt when I found that the second one which I expected to be from 5ish to 7ish was actually from 4-6, right on top of the 3:30 – 5:30 event next door. Instead, I chose to focus on how lucky I was that the events were close by, how easy it would be to begin at one, move to the next and perhaps even travel back and forth a few times if need be. I chose to take a deep breath and find the place of gratitude to work from and it made all the difference. The 4-6 event is one in which my voluntary services were needed. The other event was obligatory but not one of need – there were many dozens of others to fill the needs there. It was not hard to choose where to spend the bulk of my time. At the end of the evening I was exhausted but not stressed.
