Wake Up Call! – Present to Blessings

PRESENT TO BLESSINGS

Your past blesses you and your future beckons you when you are mindfully present to today.

Months ago memories of a difficult time in my past resurfaced. I was thrown off guard by their persistence. Was there yet more inner work to be done here?

In choosing to be present to each day the memories of the past could be approached with compassion.

Instead of more inner work these particular memories were a blessing. As I took stock of the ways in which my heart had re-calibrated itself I realized that time and the healing of my spirit is part of what allows me to now be mindfully present to each day.

The result was new appreciation for blessings of new strength and tenderness and renewed work and delight. Blessed by these blessings of the past I am present to the now and what it beckons me to.

Call-to-Action:

  • Be present to the blessings received from your past

  • Invite them to reveal the gifts they bestow

  • Be present to each day and allow the future to beckon

Notice how the blessings of the past awaken your gratitude.

Wake Up Call! – Tripped Up for Good?

TRIPPED UP FOR GOOD?

Stress is my heart’s way of tripping me up in order to stop and focus on what matters.

Two nights in a row I prepared meals to have for weekend guests. In spite of my love of cooking I was stressed out on the first night. It felt like a chore and every thought and word of mine was unpleasant.

Instead of stoically pressing on I stepped back from the stove and kitchen mess to breathe deeply.

“What’s that all about?” I asked aloud. I smiled at myself for being curmudgeon-like then asked myself, “Do you want to be owned by your stress or is there another choice?” My stress had tripped me up in order to take stock.

I thought of how blessed I am by the friends who were coming to visit. Several tasks were re-imagined and my stress dethroned. In its place I marvel at the blessing, delight and laughter of those who expand my heart. Will I remain focused this week on what matters?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be awake to what trips you up in order to grab your attention

  • Be aware of your choices about what matters to your life

Notice how the things that trip you up loose their power when you give your heart and time to what matters.

There is a man who runs the coffee stand at the county courthouse who has a massive smile and always greets customers with it and a positive message. I hadn’t seen him in nearly two years so when I did, I felt compelled to say thank you to him for his warm supportive demeanor. He attempted to brush off the compliment in a humble manner. I insisted that the kindness he showed to me had a beneficial effect on my court proceedings.he said, ” only kind people remember kindness.” once again impressed, I asked to take his picture. In exchange he asked for my hand to hold. He is without sight. He embraced my hand and said that he will recognize me by the warm, loving energy of my hand.

Caring Neighbor

Recently my husband and I celebrated our 55th birthday. It was just the two of us, but we had a lovely dinner out, and then came home. As we were walking our dog in the early evening, we encountered one of our neighbors, and told him it was our anniversary…he was truly amazed it was #55, and wished us well. A couple of hour later, the doorbell rang, and here was our neighbor, Bob, with a beautiful cake with the message “Wow” #55. We were really quite overcome with this, as we don’t know him all that well. And, since we didn’t have dessert after dinner, it was a real treat for us. You just never know when a special blessing will occur.

Wake Up Call! – Acts of Caring

ACTS OF CARING

A simple act of caring changes the day and illuminates the world with kindness.

I was recently with friends of mine, some of whom were meeting each other for the first time. Johan lives with unexpected physical challenges that affect his mobility. I noticed two friends in the group intuitively being attentive to Johan and offering assistance when he wanted to move or refresh his beverage.

Johan manages a full life but I noticed his appreciative smile in choosing to accept the care of others.

I was struck by the intuitive and reciprocal circle of care between those assisting Johan and Johan hosting an afternoon of lively conversation.

I’m reminded that each gesture of care sends ripple of kindness into the world. Each act of kindness expands the heart of all involved. I wonder what unexpected act of care will invite my attention to today?

Call-to-Action:

  • Be present to the invitation to engage in an act of caring

  • Be aware of the kindness you receive in the care of another

Notice how simple acts of care expand your heart space and that of others, making the world a little kinder today.

Wake Up Call! – Joy Acknowledged

JOY ACKNOWLEDGED

Acknowledging joy in the midst of your most trying days re-balances you.

I was driving over the mountains into Seattle in the rain this week. I was preoccupied by wet roads and a crashed server that has kept me from emails and my calendar. A cyclist in the far lane took his hands off the handle bars and raised them to the sky in a gesture of embrace. He did it again and gain.

I could have focused on whether this was normal or safe behavior but instead was captivated by the joy of his body language.

I was not tempted to take my hands off the steering wheel but my preoccupations shifted as I unexpectedly found myself thinking about the joys in my life.

I’m thankful to the cyclist for reminding me that my heart, spirit, mind and body have greater harmony when I choose to be mindful about all that brings joy to my life. Especially on the most trying or preoccupied days.

Call-to-Action:

  • Choose to be mindful about the joys of life

  • Name those joys

  • Express gratitude for each one

Notice how acknowledging joy re-calibrates your days.

Wake Up Call! – Walk Lightly

WALK LIGHTLY

To walk lightly and laugh at yourself creates space for the breath of life to flow through you unplugged.

When I arrived at my friend Joan’s house she pointed to herself and said, “Look at my pretty slippers and saggy shirt.” Then she laughed and added, “I guess this is how I am today.”

Joan reminded me of the choices I face each day about how to be.

There is seriousness about Joan’s engagement with life, her family and work. Her ability to laugh at her appearance or something silly she has said reflects the lightness with which she approaches each day.

I left Joan’s house reflecting on how the breath of life freely courses its way through her. It is infectious and inviting. I wonder in whom I will experience that spirit of the Universe today – and who might notice it in me.

Call-to-Action:

  • Offer the cares that bolt your feet and spirit to the ground to the Universe

  • Allow the creative breath of life to be present in your laughter

Notice how your choice to walk lightly opens your being to the joy and laughter of the freely coursing breath of life.

Share a story about walking lightly here.
